In 1710, Buckingham Palace was designed for the 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normandy by William Winde. The style of the house is a centralized three story block surrounded by service wings on each side. Eventually the son of the 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normandy sold the Buckingham House to George III and is still owned by the royal family. The building was originally intended to be used as a retreat place for King George III’s wife. In face his wife had 14 out of her 15 kids in the palace.

The Buckingham Palace went through some almost extravagant renovations under the rule of George IV. However, during his life the renovation did not get complete and the next reigning king (King William IV, his brother) found himself converting the palace into the new Houses of Parliament due to the fire that burned down the old ones at the Palace of Westminster.

During Queen Victoria’s reign they added another wing to the building which enclosed the central quadrangle. The large east front facing the “Mall” is today known as the public face of Buckingham Palace. This area also contains the balcony from which the royal family acknowledges crowds on special occasions.
